ESCAPE FROM INDUSTRY TO NATURE: EUROPEAN TREES

This month, the trees featuring in our special blog chasing the tree on every continent include: Pyrenean Oak, Common Privet, Wayfaring Tree, and Common Hornbeam trees. Our journey of chasing the tree on every continent continues in the European continent in May.

Evergreen Pyrenean Tree

Featuring on our social media accounts this month, the Pyrenean Oak is known as Quercus Pyrenaica in Latin. A species native to southwestern Europe, this tree is rarely found in the Pyrenees Mountains bordering France and Spain, contrary to its commonly used name. Having a slow-growing structure, the Pyrenean Oak can generally grow up to 20 meters in height. The leaves of the tree turn brown in winter months and remain on its branches until the months of spring. Cultivated also as an ornamental tree, the Pyrenean Oak is used in parks and gardens for landscaping purposes.

Strong and Pungent Common Privet

Called as Ligustrum Vulgare in Latin and found in Southern Europe, Common Privet is a shrub-form woody tree species that can grow up to 3 meters and has smooth and delicate branches. Evergreen all year long, the Common Privet tree releases a strong, pungent fragrance from its flowers, which many people find unpleasant. The tree has a grape-like fruit; and since the fruits of the tree are poisonous, they are dangerous for humans.

White Bud of High Elevations, Wayfaring Tree

Viburnum Lantana, also known as the Wayfaring Tree, is a tree species native to the European countries in the Mediterranean region. The Wayfaring Tree that can reach a height of 2-7 meters is a deciduous woody species with a shrub form. Having elliptical dark green leaves and white buds, the Wayfaring Tree grows in calcareous soils, on rocky, stony, gravelly, arid slopes and at an elevation of 1000-2000 meters.

A Shadow Tree Common Hornbeam

Our last tree native to the European continent is the Common Hornbeam, also known as Carpinus Betulus in Latin. Growing up to 15-20 meters in height, the tree grows well in warm climates and usually occurs at elevations of 600 meters. The Common Hornbeam that is a shadow tree prefers soft, fertile and moist soils. Having a shallow, wide-spreading root system, the Common Hornbeam is also preferred for landscaping purposes.
