MADAGASCAR TREES

This month, we continue our special blog chasing the tree on every continent with the trees native to Madagascar, i.e., Bois De Fer Tree, Indian Rosewood, Leptolaena Multiflora, and Weinmannia Rutenbergii.

Robust and Hard: Bois De Fer

The tree with its Latin name Humbertia Madagascariensis is known by its French name Bois De Fer. A tree native to the Southeastern Madagascar region, Bois De Fer is an evergreen tree species not shedding its leaves throughout the year. The tree Bois De Fer occurring at elevations up to about 600 meters is known with its very hard and robust structure.

The tree can grow up to 30 meters in height and has a straight and cylindrical trunk. The tree has hairless and short-stalked leaves and these leaves can reach a length of 10 centimeters. Having small flowers and brown fleshy fruits, Bois De Fer is commonly seen across Madagascar.

Low-Elevation Indian Rosewood

A species belonging to the tree family Fabaceae, the Indian Rosewood tree is called as Dalbergia Latifolia in Latin. Endemic to the low-elevation regions of Madagascar, the Indian Rosewood can reach up to 40 meters in height.

The evergreen tree not shedding its leaves throughout the year is robust and durable. The tree has a structure quite resistant to decomposition and insects. Although the Indian Rosewood has a strong and robust trunk, it is known as a slow-growing tree.

The Miracle of Traditional Medicine Leptolaena Multiflora

A species belonging to the tree family Sarcolaenaceae, Leptolaena Multiflora is a tree endemic to Madagascar. Found in a relatively narrow area along the eastern coast of Madagascar, the tree is less commonly seen in the inlands.

The boiled bark of the tree has been used in traditional medicine in the treatment of jaundice and anemia. Reaching up to 20-25 meters in height, Leptolaena Multiflora has an average size. The leaves of Leptolaena Multiflora have a simple and slightly hairy structure. The leaves of the tree can reach a length of 3-8 centimeters and have an elliptical shape.

Flexible Weinmannia Rutenbergii

A species belonging to the tree family of Cunoniaceae, Weinmannia rutenbergii is one of the tree species endemic to Madagascar. The tree that can be found from sea level up to the summits has a very common and widespread distribution. As a variety, the tree exhibits a shrub-like morphology with small leaves at high elevations.
